Desert snails: problems of heat, water and food.

چکیده
It will be a surprise to many biologists that snails are found in large numbers on the dry, barren surfaces of certain hot deserts. The present study is concerned with one such snail, Sphincterochila boissieri, which occurs in the deserts of the Near East. Live specimens of this snail, withdrawn in the shell and dormant, can be found on the desert surface in mid-summer, fully exposed to sun and heat. The surface temperature of these deserts may reach 70 °C and more than a year may pass between rains. Such a severe habitat poses three seemingly insurmountable problems for these snails: (1) thermal death, (2) desiccation, and (3) death from starvation. This paper will deal with our studies of each of these three problems.

Natural annual cycle of heat shock protein expression in land snails: desert versus Mediterranean species of Sphincterochila.
Land snails are subject to daily and seasonal variations in temperature and in water availability, and have evolved annual cycles of activity and aestivation as part of their survival strategy. We tested in the field whether adaptation to different habitats affects the endogenous levels of heat shock proteins (HSPs) in two closely related Sphincterochila snail species, a desiccation-resistant d...
متن کاملPopulation Density,Trematodal Infection and Ecology of Lymnaea Snails in Shadegan, Iran
Two snail species belonging to genus Lymnaea, L.auricularia and L.gedrosiana, were collected from 6 different districts of Shadegan area of Khoozestan. Eight percent of the total collections of the snails revealed the occurrence of larva in them. The prevalence of larva within the snails varied in different districts may be due to different geoclimatic conditions and availability of fresh water...
متن کاملDetermination of the infection of Lymnaea-gedrosina to trematodes Larval in the water region of Khuzestan
Background & Objective: The province of Khuzestan with its wide geographical area and its tropical climate is susceptible for the maintenance of snails. One of the prevalent intermediate hosts for trematode in this area is the gasteropode snail, Lymnaea gedrosina. This study is the first research, undertaken to determine the infection rate, biological characteristics and Longevity Lymnaea gedro...
متن کاملEvaluation and Simulation of Groundwater Flow in Aquifers Enclosed With Desert Saline Areas (Case Study: Isfahan Province-Ardestan Aquifer)
Quantitative changes in groundwater and crises resulting from uncontrolled water extraction have turned water resources management into one of the supply-demand dilemmas in arid regions. The present study evaluated the quantitative situation of water resources in the Ardestan Plain adjoining the Ardestan desert by using the MODFLOW mathematical model. Simulation of groundwater flow in the stead...
متن کاملEffects of food supplementation on behavioural decisions of hoopoe-larks in the Arabian Desert: balancing water, energy and thermoregulation
Patterns of time allocation to different activities can help reveal how natural selection has solved optimality problems that involve simultaneous environmental constraints. To investigate how time budgets of desert birds are affected by ambient temperature, lack of drinking water and low food availability, we provided food and water to hoopoe-larks, Alaemon alaudipes, in the Arabian Desert dur...
